Workshop This Thursday, June 12 (8am-1pm)
The Fundamentals of Sustainability Purchasing
Learn the basics of sustainability purchasing - the strategies, tools and resources to get you started or move you forward. Two local organizations in the early stages of their program development will share their successes and lessons learned:
-
"How to Eat an Elephant": Susan Doig (Purchasing Manager), Capilano College will share Capilano's approach to getting started - the methods and processes for getting started, moving things forward and tracking impacts. She will also share a few things they would have done differently.
-
Policy writing, supplier surveys, minimizing costs: Philippe Antes (Food Service Manager), Vancouver Aquarium will discuss how the Aquarium developed its policy, what they learned from surveying their retail gift shop suppliers, and how this non-profit organization balances the impetus to buy more sustainably with the constraints of limited funds. He will also share how the introduction of compostable fibre ware in the cafe helped them realize unforseen benefits.
A third organization will discuss how they used their knowledge of the ethical sourcing arena and piggybacked on large retailer social compliance programs to create a small business that screens suppliers simply and cost-effectively:
-
Supplier screening: Denise Taschereau, (co-owner), Fairware Promotional Products will share Fairware's strategies and tools for the ethical screening of suppliers. Denise will also share the insights she has discovered in the simple act of starting a conversation with suppliers around sustainability issues.
At this practical workshop we will also cover:
• The Benefits of Sustainability Purchasing and Strategies for Minimizing Costs
• 10 Ways to Start or Improve a Sustainability Purchasing Program
• Top 10 Shopping List of Opportunities
• Exercises: Create Your Organization's Sustainability Purchasing Road Map
